James Welling is a photographer who lives in New York and teaches at Princeton University. His work is collected by numerous institutions, including Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art (all New York, NY); Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago, IL; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT. In 2023 the Kunstmuseum Bielefeld presented "Dark Matter," a two person exhibition with work by Welling and his contemporary Thomas Ruff. He also writes about art for The Brooklyn Rail.
